Before being elected and making history as San Francisco’s first African-American female mayor, London Breed made a surprise appearance at a recent Handful Players production: Roy Conboy’s play, “When the Clouds Got Stuck.” After watching the May 2018 performance at the African-American Art & Culture Complex, Mayor Breed said “those young people just put the biggest smile on my face, one that I haven’t had for a very long time.”

The mayor recalled performing on the same stage as a child and spoke passionately about the importance of the arts in youth development and creative cultural expression. “It was my first opportunity to step out on stage and be encouraged by people [like Handful Players teachers], who support young people and support making sure that they have opportunities to express themselves in such an amazing way…The arts [are] so important in transforming lives.”

To show her appreciation, the Mayor presented all of the Handful Players with certificates on behalf of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

Guess who turned up at center court this spring? Yep, the talented kids from Handful Players were the halftime stars at the University of San Francisco men’s basketball game vs. Loyola Marymount on February 17. A quintet of Handful Players students from Booker T. Washington Community Service Center and Hayward Rec-Connect performed “Soy Yo”, showcasing their slam-dunk salsa, reggaetón and street dance moves. Under the guidance of dancer/choreographer Jessica Recinos, the kids proved they “got game” to a cheering crowd of 2,000 fans. And their infectious energy and spirit had a big impact – the USF Dons defeated the Loyola Lions, 72 – 63!

A hearty huzzah to our very own Artistic Director Ryan Marchand for his recent performance in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. Ryan portrayed the love-struck Lysander in the African-American Shakespeare Company’s enchanting production of the Shakespeare classic. While the course of true love never did run smooth, this inspired rendition, reimagined in a Trinidadian setting, was a joyful triumph, filled with mischievous fairies, magic potions, witty comedy and of course, star-crossed lovers. Best of all, several Handful Players students got to see their favorite theater instructor in action at a recent matinee.

The San Francisco Chronicle recently featured Sam as “an artist under 30 to watch.” In the profile, theater critic Lily Janiak praises Sam’s incredible work as an actor and singer, as well as her teaching role at Handful Players. We’re not only proud of Sam’s accomplishments, we’re also excited, because she’s just getting started. Brava, Sam!

We’re so excited to be back in session for Handful Players’ 2017-18 season! We’re offering free dance and theater classes every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday after-school at the African American Art & Culture Complex to enrich the talent, creativity and potential of San Francisco’s youth! Join us as we welcome new and returning students from The Western Addition Beacon Center, Margaret Hayward Rec-Connect and Booker T. Washington Community Service Center. The group will work all year with our artists and instructors to create Handful Player’s next production, which will have its World Premiere on May 12, 2018.

And that’s just the beginning! We’re also providing after-school musical theater programs at the Buchanan YMCA to elementary students from John Muir, Rosa Parks and New Traditions schools. Middle schoolers at KIPP SF Bay Academy with a passion for dance are attending our after-school classes. And at Booker T., middle school students will immerse themselves in the art of spoken word and dance and we’re even offering a little clowning (around) for the 1st & 2nd graders.

New & Familiar Faces

Fall marks the return of some familiar faces as well as some bright new artists to Handful Players. We’re happy to welcome back Embodiment Project dancer Amber Julian, in a dynamic new capacity. Amber teaches our middle school dance program at Booker T., helping them break in their new facility! Joining Amber at Booker T. is the incredibly talented and eloquent Tassiana Willis. Tassiana is launching a new spoken word program. Wonderful additions to our broad handful of talent!

Our New Resident Playwright

Handful Players is proud to announce this season’s resident playwright: Roy Conboy, a gifted writer, director and teacher of Latino/Mixed Blood descent. Roy will write an original play addressing themes that are academically, culturally and socially relevant to the students of the Western Addition. The play, starring the kids, will have its world premiere next year at the African American Art & Complex. As the head of San Francisco State University’s Playwriting Program for more than 20 years, Roy has brought the program to national prominence, with several graduates achieving internationally acclaimed, award-winning careers. In addition to his vast experience as an educator, Roy is committed to working with young people. Two children’s plays he wrote, “Hot Tamale/Tamale Caliente” and “El Canto del Roble/The Song of the Oak”, recently toured Central California schools through PCPA Theaterfest of Santa Maria. Roy joins an illustrious group of playwrights who have generously contributed their talents to Handful Players over the past decade, resulting in 95 original plays: Marcus Gardley, Nick Olivero, Andrew Saito, Eugenie Chan, Jeff Raz, Lauren Gunderson and Chinaka Hodge.

We are thrilled to offer such a full and enriching new season to students of the Western Addition, and we’re overjoyed at the chance to work with a handful of amazing artists who bring the learning to life.

With new programs, new faces and new talent, this year promises to be one full of fun, growth and creative expression.

We can’t wait for the curtains to rise!

Congratulations to Handful Players board member Takija Gardner on her new promotion to District Executive Director of the Buchanan and Bayview Hunters Point YMCA Centers. Her amazing work and innovative leadership at the Bayview location led to an expansion of quality programming during a time of great change in the community. Takija is no stranger to the Buchanan Y, either, having previously served as the Associate Executive Director at this branch as well. As many of you know, the local YMCA chapters are essential partners to Handful Players, with the Buchanan location an integral aspect of our performing arts programs. We’re so excited to work with Takija in this new capacity and look forward to a bright future of expanded programs and services for youth in the Western Addition. Brava, Takija!

After eight weeks, 200 workshop hours and more than 150 students participating, this summer’s activities are officially “a wrap”. The results of all that talent, creativity and hard work were vibrantly on display at the Mo’Magic Summer Showcase, where Handful Players performed for more than 300 kids from the Western Addition community. The showcase took place July 26 at the SF Jewish Community Center’s Kanbar Hall and featured 13 performances of everything from theater and dance to puppetry and spoken word. The performances celebrated- self-empowerment, multiculturalism and the heroic legacies of Cesar Chavez, Wilma Rudolph, Rosie the Riveter and others. The students, ranging from kindergarten-age to 20 years old, participated in summer programs at the Booker T. Washington Community Service Center, the Don Fisher Boys & Girls Clubhouse, Buchanan YMCA, Margaret Hayward Rec-Connect, Magic Zone and Up on Top. Handful Players’ own Ryan Marchand and Samantha Jackson directed the mini musicals, which were skillfully adapted from the Mo’Magic summer reading list by playwright Chinaka Hodge, with costumes by Rene Walker. The event also featured keyboardist Imanuel Junaedy, spoken word led by poet/rapper Trey Amos, salsa/hip-hop dance choreographed by Jessica Recinos and puppetry developed with Virginia Barrett. Ready for an encore? Watch this space for news of what we have on tap this fall!

The Mo’MAGIC Summer Showcase: July 26, 1-3pm

There are two things we all want for our kids over the summer break from school: 1) Keep them learning and 2) Keep them active. That’s where the Mo’MAGIC Summer Showcase comes in. Kids get free, beautifully illustrated books from a diverse reading list, including titles about Cesar Chavez, Wilma Rudolph, Rosie the Riveter and Ramadan. Then they act, sing and dance to bring these stories to life, in performing arts workshops with Handful Players and working on plays by playwright Chinaka Hodge. Now all that creativity and hard work is about to pay off! Join us 1pm on Wednesday, July 26 at the Jewish Community Center for live performances starring the bright, talented kids from our community. Students from the Booker T. Washington Community Service Center, the Boys & Girls Club Don Fisher Clubhouse, Buchanan YMCA, Margaret Hayward Rec-Connect, Magic Zone and Up on Top programs will be putting on an amazing show you don’t want to miss. The Jewish Community Center is 3200 California Street (@ Presidio Ave), San Francisco.
