One Radical Number

Handful Players commissioned renowned Bay Area playwright Chinaka Hodge to write “One Radical Number.” The play integrates two subjects – math and social justice – that were curriculum focus areas at John Muir Elementary School. By cleverly expressing these themes through theater and jazz, blues and rock music, Chinaka’s play brought both topics vividly to life. Students from John Muir and Presidio Schools (grades 1-7) and the Western Addition Beacon Center worked for more than eight months on the production, under the direction of James Mayagoitia and Samantha Jackson, with live musical accompaniment by Imanuel Junaedy and his jazz trio.
